I was going to twitlonger this, but then I said, “Hey, I have a blog.”
I’m not the first to notice this. Bryce touched on it back in December, and he probably wasn’t the first either. But the most widely underappreciated aspect of Neoreaction, and by this fact the source of much confusion about its nature vis-à-vis Plain Ol’ Reaction, is that it is successful at turning the mechanism of progressive meme propagation against itself. This may be the first time in history since that his been accomplished. (Please bring any other near competitors for this prize to my attention—they will be GREATLY appreciated.) In fact, I’d go so far as to say that this occult ability within its memeplex is the sine qua non of Neoreaction. Without it, indeed, you have just Plain Ol’ Paleo-conservative Reaction with a lot of Rayban-wearing, cigarette-toking hipsters pretending it’s all new and cool. Your confusion is understandable if you fail to grasp this: Neoreaction’s Dark Art.
Progressives are open-minded by definition. Of course, they are not fully so (nor is anyone), but they fancy themselves so, and would rarely admit to a sub-rational bedrock of ideological assumptions—a pale beyond which they will not willingly go. Now in the bright light of day, this set of ideological assumptions is incoherent, full of logical holes, with many axioms unprovable at best and provably false at worst. Anybody who’s rubbed a few skeptical neurons together knows this. But none of that really matters. This is due to the fact that the Progressive wears this set of assumptions as a moral pose. For status. He no more cares whether it’s logical than a peacock cares whether his tailfeathers are logical. And if he’s a True Believer™, i.e., ignorant of cognitive dissonance and rational doubts, this is only to his benefit as he may signal all the stronger, and be rewarded by the power structure with tiny additional epsilons of power.
This is key: The Garden Variety Progressive adopts a moral posture, believes what he believes, to obtain social status in a power regime that rewards moral posturing; but he thinks it is all merely goodness and rationality. In other words, he drinks the kool-aid provided for him. He will be open-minded, so long as the ideas he entertains do not resemble certain patterns.
Canada geese can be driven away by a real dog or a real wolf. They can also be driven away by wooden cutouts of a dog or wolf shape placed near where they are grazing. Their tiny goose brains have circuitry that says, “Dog (or dog shape). Danger!” They are not driven away by squirrels… or cars, in the latter case often to their peril. Squirrels and cars do not trigger flight responses. (The squirrel might trigger fight response, and if so, my bet is on the goose.)
Even with a substantially more sophisticated brain, the Progressive may be likened to the goose when it comes to ideas: Long, long ago things like kings and czars, slave-holders, white-hooded optimates (and later white-hooded white trash), wife-beaters, brown-shirts, skinheads, and such like variously opposed or harmed or suppressed his kind. When he sees stuff that looks remotely like this, his memetic immune system activates. He will not listen to anybody who remotely looks white nationalist. Probably because he will be screaming epithets at him. (Did you know geese hiss when they’re mad? (Which they are. Often.)) The Progressive’s brain is protected from any idea that such a person might utter no matter how rational or principled or heart-wrenching or correct it might be, because he sees the shape of the klansman or the brown-shirted thug, which registers viscerally as low-status loser.
Now the Neoreactionary propagandist—an alchemist of fine memetic poisons—knows this defense mechanism. This is not least because he was born Progressive, took Progressive milk from his mother’s breast, was trained by Progressive teachers in his Progressive school, consumed 6 hours of Progressive propaganda per day for 20 years. Everyone knows Progressivism in keep with his stature and position in life, just as everyone also knew Catholicism in 14th Century Italy.
Neoreaction defeats the natural defense mechanisms of the Progressive by not looking remotely white nationalist. Or Nazi. Or even remotely working class. Neoreaction may even have gay or Jewish friends. He might have gone to Ivy, or been so privileged he didn’t need to. These ideas might be a bit odd, vaguely libertarian, but older and far more exotic, and oh-so interesting, and such high verbal IQ, and (therefore) quite clearly harmless. This is how our Neoreactionary Alchemist strikes, he puts these carefully crafted, putatively harmless memes into the Progressive while his defenses are down. Moldbug was the first and greatest master of this. What would our Martian visitor think of FDR? Just what was Time reporting on so deliciously in 1942? So what does this NYT reporter mean by African “freedom” and “independence” that he considers them so much more important than “roads” and “malaria suppression”? Etc.
The Progressive may even be fancying himself the moral superior here: “Just being fair and open-minded.” “I’m purely rational, he’s purely rational, what harm could a little mental taste do? “I value honest and open-discussion!” “I must represent his views honestly!” “I’m certainly no Rush Limbaugh.” And once he does that, the honest and open-minded Progressive is putting at risk virtually everything he’s ever believed about God, about himself, about power, about society, arguably about belief itself.
Neoreaction is the first known memeplex that effectively attacks the very heart of Progressivism, bypassing its otherwise impenetrable adapted defenses, worming its way into the executive routines, and shredding it’s internal rules-based order. The Progressive may not turn to the dark side, but he will forever be damaged. All other anti-progressive mechanisms rely on power: to close or open doors, to demand loyalty and obedience, to demand silence, to reward orthodoxy and disincentivize dissent. Such mechanisms worked great in conservative plutarchic or monarchic regimes, when power hard was to divide and even harder to get.
But now, after the spectacular rise of the bourgeoisie, nearly all such regimes have fallen, and power-based means are useless at combating Progressivism. You can found conservative institutions and set up barriers that prevent entry all you want, but Progressives will just take their toys and go elsewhere. And since they own 98% of elsewhere and 99.3% of the fashionable toys, that doesn’t leave much space for genuinely conservative institutions. They might be allowed to exist, but they’ll have power in inverse proportion to the square of their conservatism.
Neoreaction is a—perhaps the—answer to this conundrum. It’s a method of actually turning Progressives to the Reactionary Side. As such, it’s a method of turning elites or would-be elites. Turn enough of them, make it fashionable to hold a different set of values, then there’s no telling how small the piece of straw might be that finally breaks the Cathedral’s back.
None of which should be construed to mean that we Reactionaries (Neo- and otherwise) should not be very much about building genuinely conservative institutions, with a positive visions for social order and immune to progressive entry and takeover. We absolutely should. But Neoreaction stands as a second front to attack the enemy and simultaneously recruit members, both elite and ordinary, to fill those institutions.
Great article :)
If lacking faith is a moral failing, is the imperfect contrition of wanting to be a part of something beautiful enough to make the sacrament of confession valid? Is the sacrilege of accepting the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin worth the appearance of standing out during the ceremony?
Anyway, the why now of NRx is easy. It’s not that 50 years of affirmative action is long enough for the children of the first recipients to be President, and people born years into it who know nothing else to begin asking questions. The cuddly proggies in the schools taught me about the scientific method and that it’s the best method ever, and to respect evidence and question authority. And then there was Moldbug with his evidence, and questions for authority
Furthermore, the Internet made it possible to scream the n-word over and over and the 5000-word essay that everyone was taught in school to reply with became 500 words and then 50 words and then stops happening at all. This assault on dominant values was hard for progressives to reject from within progressivism. Progressives who take some NRx pills might start deleting those posts and not feeling guilty about it because they are defending the myths that glue their society together against edgy teenagers.
The question of how much like WN does NRx look to a progressive is harder. Do progressives like to examine beliefs according to their results, or according to their theory? If theory, what could be meant by White supremacism other than a defense of White privilege?

Brilliant.
I wasn’t raised progressive or I wouldn’t be saying attack, I don’t really know how to turn their memes on them. Or I’d just do it.
BTW “He will not listen to anybody who remotely looks white nationalist.” = Or white.

The class divide here is becoming more obvious. I was going to say once, so I’ll say now, that there are two kinds of anti-system bloggers, those who have Golden Dawn t-shirts, and those who don’t. This is why I’m not a neo-reactionary, because in the end implicitly white is anti-white, because it has to be.

Converted elites will not be considered “converted” unless they take the oath of allegiance to their own (ethnic and genetic and religious) people. This will shatter the current caste system.

Peppermint, that’s two whopping comments, not one. (Artificially deflating my comment numbers is so de classe.)
As far as I know, the only thing that could invalidate the Sacrament of Penance, other than a invalidly ordained priest or some serious technical flaw like recording devices or something, is an intentional lying on the part of the penitent, or intentional withholding of known grave sin. (And I’m not even sure that that would do it.) If you are validly baptized (almost all trinitarian Christian baptisms would count), and have a priest willing to hear your confession and he gives you absolution, not even imperfect contrition can keep you from being absolved of all your sins. You *will* be as newly baptized and would be (at least theologically) capable of receiving communion.
The disciples of Christ said, “Lord, we believe. Help our unbelief.”
No. Of course eating and drinking damnation on one’s soul is not worth the benefit of having avoided “standing out” in any ceremony. I would not expect the failure to receive holy communion to be particularly noteworthy in any Catholic ceremony anyway. I decline to receive relatively often myself. More people should. And DEFINITELY no one should be noticing. You just don’t go up. If people feel “peer pressure” to go and receive then they are doing it wrong.
Get ye to a priest. Preferably a young one that won’t so quickly shovel you off to the RCIA system. Emphasis on the word: system. (They may yet do that, but you want an audience/relationship first.)
For the rest. Yes. Absolutely. Nrx was bound to happen. The internet is really horrible, but it has not been without its benefits. I was e-converted myself in the 2002-2006 time frame.

Nick, this is some great analysis. I concur with all your points about how neoreaction has evolved a protective camouflage that bypasses the progressive ideological immune system. But that is just the container – the other part of the NRx mind virus is the payload that gets delivered. What is the payload? The unvarnished truth about human nature, human behavior, civilizational greatness, and contemporary decline. NRx doesn’t just connect the dots, it provides answer after answer for contradictions that the Cathedral has done all they can to paper over, obscure, and ignore. After you take the red pill, your level of insight into current events far exceeds that of the pundits and the chattering class. The insights are of course appalling, and even the jaded must grapple with how on earth we might manage to undo the looming disaster before it is all too late. The stark truths of NRx are the payload, and the truth is a difficult thing to shake.
For the open minded progressives you mention, by the time they understand enough of NRx to begin to question it, they have already been exposed to a lethal dose of reactionary truth. Perhaps they reject the consequences, and re-rationalize the prog point of view. Or they can’t deal with leaving the prog tribe, so they fixate on some imperfect area of Neoreaction and reject the whole thing. It really doesn’t matter, because they are still infected. Those mental linkages have been made. Dots have been connected. Even if they reject NRx, they cannot unthink the thought crimes the NRx mind virus made them think about. NRx is a splinter in the mind that will only metastasize with time. Over time, new facts will fit the NRx framework, more contradictions will line up along NRx lines, instead of fading away, the evidence for the truth of NRx will pile up over time. Slate Star Codex? Too late for him, he drank way too deep of NRx. Adam Gurri? Sorry, Adam, what you get for being broadminded is keeping your soon-to-evolve NRx crimethoughts deep in the closet when it’s time to send the kids off to elementary school.
For the prog true believers, the exposure to NRx will be low level. However, over time other exposures from other angles of the Dark Enlightenment will cause a flare-up of ideological unsteadiness. If the progs start demonizing and attacking NRx, all they are going to manage to do is to increase prog exposure to the NRx mind virus. NRx has no infrastructure, it has no funders to attack, it has no sponsors to humiliate. NRx has no conventional points of vulnerability that exposes it to the standard political attack. If they attack NRx rhetorically they only spread the NRx infection further.
Lastly, look at what the NRx mind virus has done to us. Has anyone recanted and gone back over to the progs? Not to date. Once you fully swallow the red pill is it even really possible to decisively reject NRx? If new facts emerge that cast doubt on NRx, NRx will inevitably evolve to remain congruent with reality. Everyone in NRx had to reason themselves into the NRx beliefs in the first place – are they now going to embrace prog falsehoods? Hardly. There is no cure for the NRx mind virus. Perhaps a Neoreactionary can get sick of twitter, and keeping up with the blogs, and just decide to spend more time on self-improvement, paying attention to family, and helping to build the community. Even still, that is a win for NRx. The other path of escape seems to be conversion, such as Bruce Charlton becoming a Mormon, and other people of the Dark Enlightenment that get drawn down the path of traditional religion. Well, God certainly trumps the NRx mind virus, but even then they still remain NRx allies.
The twentysomething reactionaries have little concept on just how long the NRx payload has been cooking. I have been an observer of various offbeat intellectual schools for over 20 years, and witnessed firsthand how it all evolved:
NeoReaction: Yes, it’s all footnotes to Moldbug, but folks like Brett Stevens, Bruce Charlton have been treading on these grounds for years. Larry Auster spent nearly 20 years making the case for traditional conservatism and pissing off perhaps every ally on the right. James Kalb was bitchslapping the Cathedral around online for years before finally writing and publishing “The Tyranny of Liberalism”. Occidental Quarterly and Counter Currents has been keeping the old right alive and trying to rebrand WN for over a decade now.
The Manosphere: Warren Farrell wrote The Myth of Male Power back in the 1990’s. Around 1999 Game/PUA was developed in the discussion forums of fastseduction.com. One of the leading Game theoreticians? Some magician with the handle Mystery. Yeah, that Mystery. Later, Roissy (in pre-Heartiste) days was one of the first Game bloggers to specifically make the connection to to modern nihilism, and begin to align Game with hardcore rightwing thought. (Shout out to In Mala Fide for also forging early connections between game and right-ideology).
HBD. Of course, Steve Sailer invented the term. He has been at this since the dawn of blogging. Not to be forgotten is “La Griffe du Lion” who came up with “Smart Fraction” theory. There are old rumors that La Griffe also used to be married to Linda Gottfredson, one of the few academics that has survived prior waves of HBD purging. Razib Khan was also a big HBD heavy hitter, when there was no-one else out there and it really counted.
Here is the point of my history lesson in a nutshell: all of of these various thinkers and groups have been largely doing their own thing, and making their own investigations for the better part of 20 years. The NRx payload has been evolving on the internet for all of that time, with weak arguments getting abraded away, NRx insights getting ground down into diamond sharpness, and gradually distilling practically a dozen distinct zones of independent areas of thoughtcrime into rock solid perfection.
All that was required was the final catalyst: Nick Land coins the concept of “The Dark Enlightenment” taking this entire zone of thoughtcrime, and bringing it all under under one concept. Anomaly UK coined Neoreaction, finally providing a new label for this next generation of right wing thought. Then our host and a few others began mappping out the landscape of Neoreaction and the broader dark enlightenment. After that, it was off to the races.
Where once 50 right wing bloggers were working alone and blind in the darkness, now there was the recognition that all of them had blindly been working on describing different parts of the same elephant. This set the stage for the final distillation of the payload. All of the various families of distilled throughtcrime were brought together and blended together into the current single-dose NRx mind virus. Where once there were dozens of different crackpots on the internet working completely alone and independently, now their descendants have all come to recognize each other of being part of a greater whole, and as an entire community of emerging thought and insight.
NRx may be relatively new, but the NRx payload carries with it all the findings developed by two decades of keen right wing analytics. None of this was planned, none of this was engineered. In fact, it was evolved. Evolved on the internet where there were no institutions and reputations to punish. Evolved with no financial incentives to develop the ideas, and in fact strong reasons of reputational survival to want to have nothing to do with the ideas.Yet, the ideas grew stronger, and better, in the face of almost total cultural hostility. For 20 years, some of the best independent thinkers on the planet have been creating various components of the NRx payload. Now it is beginning to trickle out on the internet.
Read the comments in any uncensored news site, and you will see person after person express their opinions from a proto-reactionary perspective. It is only a matter of time until the NRx payload gets mass dissemination, and all of these disgruntled proto-reactionaries start getting exposed to the NRx package. When that occurs, it will likely be one of those occasions of world-historical importance.

haha, then its 3 comments :) I was going for a theme of questions that seem to change when you look at them from a different perspective. The Eucharist line was a bad example because as you note there is rarely and doctrinally should never be any peer pressure, and the question and answer make perfect sense from a purely atheistic and even progressive perspective, as the Harvard president noted.
But my third comment was my actual comment on the article. When proggies want to talk about NRx, they always say that it’s royalism. I think the reason they say that is to be charitable – and not Scott Alexander “steelmanning” charitable – and not mention the tacit or outright support for White privilege. Doesn’t mean they don’t smell the racism; when they want to accuse us of racism, they call us hipster racists with spergy political organization ideas.
So here’s a not so scary thought. What if the proggies can take those NRx pills, and uphold the civilization they want to have that is devoted to stamping out White privilege? The “what if” is a rhetorical question, of course; comics like SMBC and David Brin flirt with that. But unless the DailyStormer crowd is right and progressivism is really just a Jewish hoax to destroy White civilization, once they go down that road of upholding and creating, they become us, and it’s only a matter of time before they stop regarding White privilege as the ultimate evil.
It should not be a surprised that they become us, because we were them, but turned away because democracy and democratic values don’t work for civilization – that was your point. Because we are the natural evolution of them, it makes no sense to fear entryism.

The issue is that “white privilege” and “male privilege” and “straight privilege” are all features of reality. Progressives didn’t wind up at those positions by accident. They had the same process of evolution of ideas go on to wind up where they are – just their ideas aren’t being selected for truth. They’re being selected the twin goals of enhancing progressive power and forcing progressive enemies to trip the progressive immune system by arguing against them.
[sticking with the “white privilege” as an example – you can fill in the blanks for the rest of the x privileges]
How do you argue against this statement “white privilege means that you don’t face a 40% chance of going to jail in your lifetime” – without mentioning the difference in crime rates? Who mentions the difference in crime rates? This guy:
Yep, that triggers the progressive immune system for sure and that’s the whole point. They put out an argument where the choices are crimethink or their conclusion.
I can’t see them giving that up – not until they themselves start to get swallowed up by their denial of reality.

Basically if they give up opposition “x privilege” they trigger the alarms of the rest of the progressives. No one can fall out of line unless they all agree to stop mentioning it.
New York City elected Bill DeBlasio in large part because progressives couldn’t coordinate ignoring what was needed to keep order in the city.
Hey, maybe DeBlasio administers the city as well as Bloomberg. Maybe the city doesn’t even need administration of that high quality any longer and can skate by.
Either way though – progressives didn’t have to concede that they were wrong – they just had to not notice and they couldn’t do that.

Personally, I think privilege talk, like most prog talking points, is a total red herring. Equal, i.e., race-blind, treatment under the law was the default Northern Dem + GOP position in 1965. Having tried that, some people don’t like the outcomes you get. So somebody or at least something must be to blame. Coming up with whoms to blame is a multi-billion dollar (not-for-profit) industry. The net losers, whether anyone gets indicted or not, is working class whites. Well who else ya gonna blame? Who else can afford it??
Sure proggies could give up and live with Disparate Impact. Or Nazi NYC police tactics. And maybe that could buy us an additional century of civilization. So I wouldn’t stand in their way, even if that helps them stay in power. There was, of course, much to dislike in Giuliani-Bloomberg, but being Nazi wasn’t one of them. But generally, the ratchet only goes one way, so I wouldn’t hold my breath.

The idea that White privilege is a red herring and the iron fist of government is stuck in Black power mode is fleshed out by Moldbug. I agree that the ethnic cleansing of the cities by Black and Hispanic militias endorsed by the Federal government is more important than White privilege.
But White privilege still exists and needs to be either justified or stamped out.
The Catholic Church has 2000 years, 40 50-year generations of the best minds of Europe, to figure things out and develop doctrines that I think everyone should be aware of even if they ultimately disagree. I don’t think they’ve faced the challenge of it being this easy to help people reproduce and sustain themselves. This is really a blessing, not a curse; but it could destroy civilization if we can’t figure it out.
At some point, we need to either stop viewing each human life as uniquely sacred, or, require people, especially those with undesirable traits, to not reproduce as quickly.
And how convenient that White privilege would allocate most resources to reproducing Whites – for civilization, of course!
We can deal with the threat of overpopulation, or we can deal with the reality of overpopulation by adjusting our feelings for the sanctity of life. But first we need to figure out just how much the atomic individual is the basic unit of society, versus the family, and the race.

Johnson: One may hope. In humanizing the neo-nazi or Archie Bunker, those who entertain us best may themselves be inserting the poison pill.
Peppermint:
There are clear ethical boundaries to how much eugenics is acceptable. First, yes, the sanctity of life is much more important than reproductive rights. Tho’ with the exception of totalitarian societies, “reproductive rights” has never meant anything other than the right not to reproduce (even if you may have went through the motions of it). It is so not least for the impact it has on those who have power to give life and take it. Those of us, in other words, who remain.
Yes we live in an unprecedented state: Dysgenic fertility. There are many causes. Clearly subsidizing bastardy is part of it. There is no plausible Catholic doctrine that forces “us” (governments or do-gooders) to subsidize bastardy. (We may be constrained to “care for the poor”, but if we are doing the caring, we can certainly control who’s spreading their legs for whom.) Clearly, poorly regulated third world migration is part of it. There is no plausible Catholic doctrine that forces us to concede open borders. Clearly, and the arguably the worst part of it, high IQ/SES fertility is unnaturally (preternaturally) low. There are many cultural factors contributing to that. The Pill is the big enabler there, and is probably not fixable by positive law. But college fetish and the its effects: late marriage and child-bearing are touched by public policy.
So if you imagine a Ron Paulian rELOVution wherein subsidization of bastardy and college attendance and open borders immigration ceased, then how much would dysgenic fertility turn around? At least a lot. Maybe not all. But, hey, it’d be worth a try.
Handle has (somewhere) put forth some tax code modifications to encourage eugenic fertility. A la scale the child tax credit by income. Tax cut for the wealthy sure, but hey stuff like that happens.
So my basic feeling is that we are quite far from out of practical ammunition in turning back dysgenic fertility. Someday we may be, and perhaps I’ll be arguing for heading for hills. Culturally, I already am arguing for that. But my Catholic conscience forbids me from entertain certain aggressive eugenic policies. Letting people starve to death because of their stupidity isn’t one of them.

one must not commit murder, sodomy, oppress the poor, or defraud a workingman of his wages.
Is letting people starve to death ‘oppressing the poor’? This is sort of a ridiculous situation, so the arguments we make about it are going to be ridiculous. The labor power of the EBT slaves is clearly not worth their upkeep. But they are slaves, so we can’t oppress them.
So here’s the plan. Put the EBT slaves in housing projects, like before. Unlike before, require strict discipline of them, including keeping their housing projects clean. Let the best of them become overseers and permit the overseers one child. Problem is resolved pretty quickly.
Having enough resources to house, clothe, and feed so many worthless slaves is only a curse because of what the slaves are being used for – the self-aggrandizement of politicians.

One not capable of providing himself should consider servitude a mercy not a punishment; he is, by definition, a ward. Servitude implies the voluntary renunciation of certain freedoms including the freedom to marry and procreate. If a servant disobeys the rules, the master may consider the contract abrogated and toss the servant out on the street. If he starves to death as a result of his own poor judgement or impulse control, it is his own fault. Perhaps someone will yet be moved by compassion and pity for him in this condition and take him in and give him a “second” chance. If so that benevolent person would be wise to place even stronger controls on his behavior. Though such acts are praiseworthy, the Christian is under no obligation to take such actions.
